About Kuber Puja
Kuber Puja is the formal worship of Bhagavan Kubera — the Lord of Wealth, the Treasurer of the Gods, and the chief of the Yakshas. The Vishnu Purana, Skanda Purana, and Mahabharata describe Kubera as the son of Sage Vishrava and brother of Ravana, who through severe tapas earned from Brahma the lordship of all treasures of the earth — the Nidhis (sacred treasures including Padma, Mahapadma, Shankha, and others) — and the regency of the northern direction. He resides at Alaka in the Himalayas with his celestial city of gold. In Hindu cosmology Kubera is the wealth-bestower whose grace flows through Lakshmi to the household; he manages the cosmic treasury and disperses prosperity to those whose karma and propitiation merit it. Kubera is invariably worshipped alongside Lakshmi — Lakshmi is the goddess of fortune and movable wealth; Kubera is the steward of fixed wealth, treasures, real estate, and accumulated capital. The Sri Vaishnava view treats Kubera as Vishnu's appointed wealth-bestower; the Smartha view treats him as a Dikpalaka (directional guardian) of the north; the Madhwa view treats him as a Vishnu-servant. Kuber Puja is performed for prosperity, debt removal, business success, wealth accumulation, and protection of accumulated assets.
When to perform
Diwali (Deepavali) is the supreme day for Kuber Puja in conjunction with Lakshmi Puja — Lakshmi-Kubera paired worship is performed on Diwali night by virtually every Hindu household. Dhanteras (the 13th tithi of Krishna Paksha Kartika, two days before Diwali) is dedicated to Kubera and Dhanvantari — the day to purchase gold, silver, brass utensils, and to formally invoke Kubera into the new ledgers and account books of businesses. Akshaya Tritiya (Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya) is the supreme day for new wealth-acquisitions — gold purchase, opening of new accounts, business inaugurations are all blessed by Kuber Puja on this day. Every Pournami (full moon) is auspicious for Kuber Puja for prosperity. Friday is the secondary day (linked through Lakshmi). The muhurta is set in the evening (Pradosha-time) for Diwali and Dhanteras; in the morning hours for Akshaya Tritiya; flexible for general Kuber Puja. Major business expansions, opening of new shops, signing of significant contracts are all preceded by Kuber Puja at the chosen muhurta. Avoid Krishna Paksha Amavasya for Kuber-specific rites except Diwali.
Why perform this puja
Devotees perform Kuber Puja for the specific wealth-related concerns that constitute his domain. First, for general prosperity (Aishwarya) — the steady accumulation of wealth that supports family, dharma, and charitable activity. Second, for debt removal (Rina-Mukti) — when a family faces persistent debt burden, loan obligations, or financial liabilities, Kuber Puja invokes the Rina-Mochan aspect of his grace. Third, for business success — opening of new ventures, expansion of existing businesses, signing of major contracts; Kubera as the cosmic treasurer is invoked for the long-term sustainability of enterprise. Fourth, for protection of accumulated wealth — preventing loss through theft, fraud, market crashes, lawsuits; Kubera as the guardian of treasures wards off all such threats. Fifth, for real estate and property concerns — Kubera as the lord of fixed wealth (sthavara) is invoked for property purchases, construction, and dispute resolution. Sixth, for Akshaya Patra-like grace — Kubera is the source of inexhaustible flow; his propitiation is said to convert sporadic income into steady abundance. Seventh, for the Dharmic use of wealth — Kubera grants wealth to those who use it dharmically; his propitiation aligns the devotee's wealth-relationship with dharma.
How the puja unfolds
The devotee bathes and dons fresh yellow, gold, or saffron clothing — Kubera's preferred colours. The puja is performed facing north (Kubera's direction). Sankalpa is declared with gotra, name, location, tithi, and intention (general prosperity, debt removal, business inauguration, etc.). Ganesh Pooja, Lakshmi Puja (invariably preceding) and Punyahavachanam open the rite. The Kuber yantra (8 or 9-lined yantra in copper, silver, or gold), or the Kubera murti, or simply a brass/silver kalasha filled with grains and a gold coin is used as the focus. Lakshmi-Kubera paired worship is the most common form. Shodashopachara is performed with Kubera-specific substances: Avahana, Asana, Padya, Arghya, Achamana, Snana with milk-water (paired with the Lakshmi pratima next to Kubera), Vastra (yellow or saffron cotton or silk), Yajnopavita, Chandana, Akshata, Pushpa (yellow flowers — marigold, yellow lotus, yellow chrysanthemum), Dhupa, Deepa (ghee lamp). Naivedya: rice with ghee, kheer, jaggery sweets, banana, coconut, betel-nut, betel-leaves. The distinctive Kubera aspect: a gold coin or silver coin is placed on the yantra and prayed over; new account books or ledgers are placed before the yantra and inaugurated. Kuber Ashtottara archana follows. Aarti with camphor concludes. Brahmin / family-priest blessing of all wealth-instruments (account books, lockers, business premises) follows. Duration: 60-120 minutes.
Benefits
Kuber Puja's benefits target the wealth-domain across material, astrological, and spiritual planes. Material: steady increase in family income; debt clearance and freedom from financial obligations; success in business ventures; favourable real estate transactions; preservation and growth of savings and investments; access to liquid capital when needed; favourable resolution of inheritance and property disputes; ease in loan procurement when genuinely needed (Kubera blesses dharmic borrowing). Astrological: strengthening of the wealth-houses in the natal chart (2nd, 11th, and 5th); appeasement of Jupiter (Kubera is associated with Brihaspati); reduction of Lakshmi-Mahadasha-related obstacles when paired with Lakshmi Puja; relief from Pitra Dosha-related wealth obstacles when paired with Pitru rites. Karmic: dharmic-use of wealth — the rite aligns the devotee's relationship with money, transforming wealth from mere accumulation into a tool for dharma, charity, and family welfare. Familial: harmonious management of family finances; reduction of money-related family conflicts; intergenerational wealth preservation. Spiritual: detachment from greed paradoxically strengthened — Kubera as a Dikpalaka grants wealth specifically to those who maintain dharmic detachment from it. The Vishnu Purana states: 'Kubera bestows wealth upon the dharmic householder who uses it for the support of guests, brahmins, ancestors, and the needy; from such a one, Lakshmi never departs.'

What affects the price?
Pricing depends on scale, occasion, and the metal of the Kuber yantra. A simple home Kuber Puja paired with Lakshmi Puja on a Friday with one priest is the most economical; a full Diwali Lakshmi-Kuber Puja with elaborate Sri Suktam Homa, Kuber Sahasranama, and Brahmana Bhojanam is considerably higher. The metal of the Kuber yantra significantly affects cost — copper is economical, silver is mid-tier, gold is the most premium and typically commissioned by businesses for permanent installation in their premises. Pancha-loha yantras with proper Pratishtha (consecration) command higher dakshina. Whether the rite is performed at home, business premises, or a temple matters — business-opening rites are typically elaborate and command higher dakshina. Akshaya Tritiya, Diwali, and Dhanteras rites are typically elaborate and may include multiple priests (especially for business-scale rites). Pancharatna (5 gems) or Yellow Sapphire (pukhraj) inclusion adds substantially to total cost — a quality Yellow Sapphire ring for Kubera-Brihaspati is a substantial investment. Number of brahmins fed afterwards (5, 11, 21) affects cost. Kuber Yantra Pratishtha (consecration) for permanent installation is the highest-end variation — involves proper Avahana, Pranapratishtha, and lifetime worship-instructions for the family.
