About Sudarshana Homa

Sudarshana Homa is one of the most powerful fire rituals (yajnas) in the Vaishnava tradition, offered to Sri Sudarshana — the radiant chakra-wielding manifestation of Sriman Narayana whose discus protects the devotee against every conceivable evil. The word Sudarshana derives from the Sanskrit Su (auspicious) and Darshana (vision), thus the auspicious vision — the Lord protective gaze that destroys ignorance and demonic forces alike. The deity is described in the Pancharatra Agama, the Ahirbudhnya Samhita, and the Mahabharata, and finds direct mention in the Rig Veda. In Sri Vaishnava theology Sudarshana is one of the Pancha Ayudhas of Vishnu — the Sankha, Chakra, Gada, Padma, and Khadga — and is worshipped as a fully personified deity in his own right. The homa is especially significant for devotees of Sri Ramanuja parampara and is regularly performed at the major Vaishnava kshetras: Tirumala, Srirangam, Ahobilam, and at the Chinna Jeeyar Swami Ashram. A single Sudarshana Homa is traditionally said to equal the merit of ten ordinary yajnas.

When to perform

The most auspicious day to perform Sudarshana Homa is Sudarshana Jayanti (the day Sri Sudarshana manifested), which falls on the second day after Vaikunta Ekadashi in the month of Margashira/Margazhi. Other powerful days include all Saturdays (Sudarshana special day, when the chakra protective vibration is at peak), every Ekadashi (especially Vaikunta Ekadashi), every Pournami, Vishnu-related festivals (Sri Rama Navami, Sri Krishna Janmashtami, Narasimha Jayanti, Akshaya Tritiya), and the personal Janma Nakshatra of the devotee. The homa is also performed during periods of severe difficulty — illness in the family, recurring obstacles, legal cases, business setbacks, fear of unseen forces, or whenever protection is sought. Brahma Muhurtha (just before sunrise) is the most potent time for the agni pratishthapana, with the main offering completing within four to five hours.

Why perform this puja

The chakra of Sri Sudarshana is the supreme protector. Devotees perform this homa to seek shielding from negative energies, black magic (kshudra prayoga), evil eye (drishti), unseen ailments, planetary afflictions, and accidents. It is performed before legal cases, surgeries, long journeys, business launches, and significant transitions. Families undergoing prolonged misfortune perform it to break the cycle of difficulty. Devotees also perform it for spiritual upliftment — to dispel inner enemies (kama, krodha, lobha, moha, mada, matsarya) which are the deeper meaning of the chakra cutting down asuras. In Sri Vaishnava households it is considered the most efficient remedy for any kind of arishta — disease, debt, distress, or fear. Beyond protection, the homa is performed in pure devotion, simply to feel the warmth and grace of Sudarshana Bhagavan and to deepen one surrender (sharanagati) to the Lord.

How the puja unfolds

The homa unfolds across four to five hours. It begins with Sankalpa by the chief yajamana, followed by Achamana and Pranayama. Ganapati Pooja removes obstacles. Punyahavachanam purifies the homa shala. The Sudarshana Yantra is drawn or installed at the centre — a complex sat-kona (six-pointed) yantra with the moola mantra inscribed in concentric squares — and Sudarshana Kalasha Sthapana is performed, with the Lord invoked into a brass kalasha. Agni Pratishthapana follows, where the sacred fire is kindled with mango, peepal, palasha, and bilva samidhas. The priest performs Sudarshana Mantra Japa — the moola mantra (Om Sahasrara Hum Phat) repeated 108, 1,008, or 10,008 times depending on the scale chosen. Aahuti offerings of ghee, sesame, apamarga samith, panchagavyam, and havis are made into the fire, each accompanied by the chakra mantra. Sudarshana Stuti and the Sudarshana Ashtottaram are recited. The Mahapurnahuti — the final great offering of fruits, coconut, ghee, and a flower — concludes the homa, after which Aarti, Mantra-Pushpam, and Tirtha-prasada distribution are performed. The yajamana receives the protective Sudarshana taveedu (kavacham) tied with red thread.

Benefits

The Sudarshana Homa is celebrated across Vaishnava literature as the supreme protector. It removes black magic, evil eye, and the lingering effect of curses. It dispels recurring difficulties — illness, debt, legal trouble, professional stagnation. It safeguards against accidents, sudden death, theft, and treachery. Health-wise it heals chronic conditions resistant to treatment, particularly those rooted in invisible causes. Mentally it brings clarity, relief from depression, and freedom from fear. Spiritually it cuts the inner ari-shadvarga (lust, anger, greed, delusion, pride, jealousy), accelerating the devotee progress in sharanagati. Materially it stabilises wealth, restores professional standing, and removes vighnas in business. Generationally it strengthens the family punya, often described as the kavacham over the household for seven generations. Pancharatra texts state that one Sudarshana Homa performed with shraddha is equivalent to ten yajnas of any other kind.

Samagri checklist

Sudarshana yantra (drawn on copper plate or fresh banana leaf), or Sudarshana Salagrama if available. Brass or copper kalasha, mango leaves, coconut, sacred thread (kalava). Agni-kunda (square fire pit, one or two cubits) lined with sand. Samidhas: peepal, palasha, mango, bilva, apamarga sticks (108 each). Havan samagri mixture: nine herbs, sandalwood powder, jaggery, sesame (tila), barley, rice, ghee. Ghee minimum one kilogram (preferably homemade cow ghee). Panchagavyam (cow milk, curd, ghee, urine, dung) in small vessels. Flowers: lotus, tulsi, red hibiscus, marigold, jasmine. Fruits: coconut, banana, mango, pomegranate. Vastram for the deity, dakshina envelope for the priest. Camphor, agarbatti, vibhuti, kumkuma, sandal paste. Red protective thread (raksha sutra) for tying around the wrist after the homa. Akshata (rice with turmeric). Where the full traditional samagri is offered, additional items include Krishna Tulasi, Sahasrara samith, and special ahuti dravyas as prescribed in the Ahirbudhnya Samhita.

Mantras and recitations

Moola Mantra (chanted 108-10,008 times): Om Sahasrara Hum Phat. Maha Mantra: Om Sri Sudarshanaya Hetirajaya Namaha. Sudarshana Gayatri: Om Sudarshanaya Vidmahe, Mahajwalaya Dhimahi, Tannah Chakrah Prachodayat — We meditate on Sudarshana, on the great-flamed one; may that chakra inspire us. Where time permits the Sudarshana Ashtakam of Sri Vedanta Desika, the Sudarshana Shatakam, the Sudarshana Ashtottaram, the Chakra Suktam from the Mahanarayana Upanishad, and the Vishnu Sahasranama are recited. The seed mantra (bija) is Hum — the chakra-bija that is at the heart of every protective invocation. In Sri Vaishnava parampara, the prescribed dhyana sloka begins Pratyalidha-pada-mautim. Each ahuti offering is accompanied by either the moola mantra or one of the 108 names from the Sudarshana Ashtottaram.

Regional variations

The homa is observed in three principal scales: Laghu Sudarshana Homa with 108 ahutis (1-2 hours, suitable for personal protection); Madhyama Sudarshana Homa with 1,008 ahutis (3-4 hours, suitable for family-wide blessing); and Maha Sudarshana Homa with 10,008 ahutis (full day, often performed for community welfare or after major adversity). In the Pancharatra parampara (Sri Vaishnava — Iyengar, Chinna Jeeyar Mutt) the Lord is worshipped via the Ahirbudhnya Samhita procedure with full Tiruvaradhanam preceding the homa. In the Vaikhanasa parampara (followed at Tirumala) the homa is integrated with daily nitya-aradhanam. Smartha households perform a simpler havan-style ritual with fewer ahutis and no Tiruvaradhanam. Dvija (twice-born) yajamanas may participate directly in the ahuti offering; others sit in shraddha and watch. At Tirumala, Srirangam, and Chinna Jeeyar Ashram the homa is conducted publicly on Sudarshana Jayanti and Vaikunta Ekadashi with thousands of devotees in attendance.

What affects the price?

Cost depends on (a) scale of homa — Laghu (108), Madhyama (1,008), or Maha (10,008 ahutis); (b) number of priests — minimum two for Madhyama, four to eight for Maha; (c) duration — from 1.5 hours to a full day; (d) samagri — whether full traditional samagri kit is included or supplied by yajamana, particularly the cost of pure cow ghee (1-10 kg depending on scale); (e) Tiruvaradhanam — whether full Pancharatra-style temple worship precedes the homa; (f) location — home havan-shala vs. mutt vs. temple precinct; (g) scale of dakshina — and whether Brahmana bhojanam follows; and (h) number of devotees for whom Sankalpa is taken — family unit vs. extended kutumba; the homa can be sponsored for up to twelve sankalpas in one session. A Maha Sudarshana Homa at a Vaishnava mutt is among the more elaborate yajnas in present-day Hindu practice.
